Bob Dylan, Lifelong Companion

Bob Dylan has rarely been celebrated for his vocals, though I found him to be a particularly expressive singer, able to communicate quite a range of emotion and nuanced ideas, particularly as a younger man. Examples? Listen to “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again” from Blonde on Blonde, “If You See Her Say Hello” from Blood on the Tracks, or “Blind Willie McTell” from The Bootleg Series Volumes 1 — 3. Even if his voice is not your cup of tea, it’s hard to argue with the brilliant writing and musical and cultural impact of such songs as “Blowin’ in the Wind”, “Chimes of Freedom”, “Like a Rolling Stone”, “All Along the Watchtower”, “Tangled Up in Blue”, “Mississippi”, and so many more. The only songwriter to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition,” Dylan, at 84, is still on the road playing to large crowds, in the midst of a 63 year (and counting) recording career. I hope to release my newest book, LIFELONG COMPANION: MY JOURNEY THROUGH 100 DYLAN SONGS early in the new year. I hope you will read it. Thank you.
